CCSD Releases Information Regarding School Meals For 2022-2023 School Year

July 28, 2022

Charleston, SC – For the past two years, Congress has allowed the United States Department of Agriculture (USA) to grant waivers allowing all students to eat for free. These waivers reduced barriers school nutrition programs faced, ensuring all students had access to nutritious meals, regardless of their family financial situation. An extension of the pandemic relief funds was not included in a spending bill approved by the U.S. Congress earlier this year. The free meal waivers will expire in August 2022, so Charleston County School District (CCSD) will return to pre-COVID-19 operations.

Breakfast and lunch prices for students will be as follows for the 2022-2023 school year:

Breakfast Prices

• Full Price, Student - $1.40

• Reduced Price, Student - $0.30

• Adult Price - $2.75

Lunch Prices

• Full Price, Student - $2.25

• Reduced Price, Student - $0.40

• Adult Price - $4.25

CCSD is asking parents/guardians to complete an application online at to see if their student qualifies for a free or reduced lunch. Paper applications can be obtained at every CCSD school if needed.

Once the district’s Nutrition Services Department receives an application, expect up to ten days for the application to be processed (online applications are processed quicker than paper applications).

If a child attends a Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) school in CCSD, parents do not need to complete a free/reduced application. All students at CEP schools receive meals at no cost. The list of CEP schools in CCSD is available here. However, families with students at both non-CEP and CEP schools still need to complete a Free and Reduced Meal application. When completing an application, one must include all the children in the household.

All families at non-CEP schools must complete a new application to determine if a student qualifies for these benefits. All children starting kindergarten are considered “full pay,” meaning they would be charged for meals until their application is approved.
